How do I Connect my computer to the Internet?

  • LOCATE the Network Port or Ethernet Port on your computer
  • PLUG the Ethernet Cable installed by OptiNet into that port
  • SHUTDOWN / RESTART your computer
  • Wait at least 2 minutes for the computer to boot completely
  • OPEN your favorite web browser (Fire Fox, Chrome, Internet Explorer)
  • TYPE in or SEARCH for your favorite website
  • Still UNABLE TO CONNECT please CALL our 24/7 Tech Support
  • Testing your internet connection
    • START here if you DON’T HAVE Router or Switch
      • POWER ON your desktop or laptop
      • OPEN your favorite web browser (Fire Fox, Chrome, Internet Explore)
      • TYPE in or SEARCH for your favorite website
      • PRESS ENTER and wait for page to load
        • What if the page doesn’t load?
          • TRY another website address or search
            • Still not loading
              • RESTART your desktop, try again and if still unable to connect, Please CALL our 24/7 Tech Support
  • Router or Switch
    • SHUTDOWN / POWER OFF any and all devices that connect to the internet, including your Router or Switch
    • POWER ON your Router or Switch
    • WAIT at 2 minutes
    • POWER ON a laptop or desktop that’s connected to the Router or Switch
    • WAIT at least 2 minutes for the device to boot completely and communicate with the Router or Switch
    • OPEN your favorite web browser (Fire Fox, Chrome, Internet Explorer)

        • If still not loading RESTART your Router or Switch by pulling the power cord out of the back of device or where its plugged into power source and plug it back in

How do I get the most accurate speed test results?

  • Speed Tests gives the most accurate results when you are connected to the internet via a direct cable from your computer to your OptiNet Ethernet / Data line
  • Connections which rely on wireless signal strength may have varying results that do not represent the full potential of your service
    • Make sure you are connected to the internet directly via your OptiNet data line (Ethernet Cable)
    • Make sure you are not downloading or uploading anything
    • Close any other programs that are using the internet
    • Turn off any other computers, tablets, gaming consoles that share your home network
    • Test the connection from speedtest.net

How do I Release and Renew my IP Address?

What is malware?

  • Malware is short for “malicious software.” Malware is any kind of unwanted software that is installed without your adequate consent. Viruses, worms, and Trojan horses are examples of malicious software that are often grouped together and referred to as malware.

How do I protect my computer/devices from malware?

  • There are several free ways to help protect your computer against malware:
  1. Keep your Operating system (i.e. > Windows 7 / Mac ) up to date to make sure you have all the latest security updates.
  2. If you have a firewall keep it turned on
  3. Don’t open spam email messages
  4. Don’t click links on suspicious websites
  5. Download / install some form of reputable antivirus and anti-malware program

Many computer viruses are stopped before they can start, but there is still an ever growing concern as to what do computer viruses do and the list of common computer virus symptoms. A computer virus might corrupt or delete data on your computer, use your email program to spread itself to other computers, or even erase everything on your hard disk
  • Computer viruses are often spread by attachments in email messages or instant messaging messages. That is why it is essential that you never open email attachments unless you know who it’s from and you are expecting it
  • Viruses can be disguised as attachments of funny images, greeting cards, or audio and video files
  • Computer viruses also spread through downloads on the Internet. They can be hidden in illicit software or other files or programs you might download
